How can you loose what you never had ?

had a good chat tonight with a couple of my crew (and a good few beers) but a good point came up within our banter. on the low budget side of things you make do with things you dont have , how do you know you to do that unless you ever had them in the first place ? mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

erm....because on set someone says
'What we need is a big light over there!'
and someone else says
'we cant afford one.'
??
But I think that even if you had 3 million quid to make a film, you would still want to do something that you cant afford to do.

I think thats a film making trap, which is part of the reason films cost such a ludicrous amount of money, and why Im proud that my film so far has cost less than a new car and to be a part of the low budget indie scene - rather than get hung up on being famous and having a big house in California >yawn<

I guess working for people who do have them. For instance the first film I worked on had a proper steady cam thing, the last thing we did we built our own? Same goes with the catering- a proper catering van and bus with hot meals and everything to our cool box full of sandwhiches?

How do you know you really need a big light?

If I think that this shot needs more light, and I can't supply it, then I'd make do without. but I can generallly supply it, even if it's a reflector consisting of a silver umbrella turned inside out.

it's an excuse to cover up your inept filmmaking skills. I think the filmmaker has this idea that there's a machine for everything and if you're not getting the right effect or the right tone, it's because you don't have some machine (that hollywood does).

It's all a cover up of lack of talent.

Maybe it's just me but I thinks it's really easy to make do without something you've never had. I think it'd be weird to go 'Shit, what we need is a crane to lift the camera 20ft in the air over the actors head'.

If you've never had that stuff then how can you plan a shot or write a script where you need it and then go 'bugger I don't have that'.

I agree with soulfilms on this one.
